Kathy Grant (1921-2010) was also a student of Joe and Clara Pilates; she became certified in the Pilates method in 1957 at Joe’s studio and began a long teaching career of over 50 years. Kathy began teaching at an exercise studio at the Henri Bendel store on Fifth Avenue, and became its manager after Naja Corey. Around 1970, Kathy became the director of the Clark Center for Performing Arts where she advocated for mat Pilates classes (taught by her friend Lolita San Miguel). Most notably, Kathy taught a year-long Pilates course at NYU, Tisch School of the Arts – she held a faculty position there from 1988 till the end of her career. Kathy gave to the African American community through her involvement at the Dance Theater of Harlem. She was beloved by her students at Tisch and is greatly remembered in the arts community.
“Kathy showed me how to look at the body in motion in a way that far exceeded the movement itself. Her teaching truly did transcend movement; it was about embracing and integrating every one of the principles of Pilates on the deepest levels.” Rael Isacowitz (from blog entry)
